What’s On at the DAD? - The Talent Shines Through. . . .

disABILITY in MUSIC

The Firestone Rock Band

FRB is a mixed ability band, most of whom have a disability, who want to be recognised as musicians. They have been together in many forms for the last 20 years and have played around the South East – mainly in Surrey – although they have come direct from their appearance at the music festival in San Savinien, near La Rochelle, France to attend the DAD.

The FRB have now recorded two CDs. Playing at gigs and doing music workshops in schools and day centres financed the second CD entitled ’Magic’.

FRB has ten core members and many others who join them from time to time depending in which direction they are travelling to the gig. Today they hope that they will be performing with 9 members.
Their music ranges from U2, REM, Queen, Eagles, Beatles with many 60’s and 70’s rock and soul classics as well as those that are self-penned.

disABILITY in DANCE

The Choughs Wheelchair Dancers

The Choughs Wheelchair Dance Team was formed in 1970 to help improve physical co-ordination and reproduce the art of ballroom dancing irrespective of feet on floor! The original team was formed with eight members. It was only a year after their formation that The Choughs entered their first competition held in London. They became The National Champions, a title they continued to retain for many years. When the International Championships were introduced in 1975, The Choughs again emerged victorious on their first attempt and managed to successfully defend their title every other year when the Championships were held. They are the current National Champions and have been for over 30 years and they have just won all the categories they contested in the regional finals including the Team Championship.

StopGap Dance Company

StopGAP is a dance company that challenges traditional notions about dance by using each dancer’s physical and intellectual potential as a starting point for creating new work. It works from a philosophy of physical, psychological and social integration. In so doing they recognise and celebrate individuality and the differences between people whilst continually seeking artistic and technical excellence in all that they do.

StopGAP’s mission is to bring to the public forum clear demonstrations of what can be achieved through the true spirit of integration using the medium of dance. Their aim is to make work that is empowering, engaging, entertaining and accessible whilst challenging creative, technical and artistic complacency.

StopGap’s troupe attending the DAD are as follows: - Chris Pavia - Dancer, Laura Jones - Dancer, Dan Watson - Dancer, Lucy Bennett - Dancer, Vicki Balaam - Artistic Director.

disABILITY in COMEDY

Jaik Campbell

What can 29-year-old, half-Scottish/half-English, London based stand-up, Jaik Campbell, say about his act? Normally not much as Jaik does, honestly, have a reasonably bad stutter, although fortunately Jaik has found that performing comedy has improved his self-confidence and thus is gradually helping him to overcome his stutter. (Well, that’s what his (sadistic) speech therapist advised him to do anyway.) His dream is to do a 20-minute routine without stuttering, but admits that this is not possible at the moment, and probably wouldn’t be as funny either!

Steve Day

Steve is the UK’s only deaf comedian - if there are any others, he hasn’t heard! A hugely respected performer on the UK comedy circuit, Steve is a regular at many clubs around the country and has also performed in Denmark and Germany to critical acclaim. Steve took his debut solo show to the 2002 Edinburgh Fringe. He has since performed this show all over the country including the Acorn Theatre!
Steve was the star of a short Channel 4 documentary,“Natural Born Talent” and was recently profiled in the Danish broadsheet Politiken.

disABILITY in THEATRE

Clean Slate Theatre Company

Two disabled actors discovered there was no company, which allowed disabled and able-bodied actors to perform comedy and non disability-related drama together, formed Clean Slate Theatre Company. “The Importance of Being Earnest” is Clean Slate’s first production and they believe that using disabled actors adds not detracts from the humour of the play. Another disabled actor joins the founding members and two able bodied performers to bring you a unique production of this classic comedy.

Let us introduce you to Ernest: Ernest Worthing is a man with a secret. To his best friend Algernon he is Ernest, but to his “excessively pretty” ward Cecily and her sensible governess Miss Prism he is Jack. When he proposes to girlfriend Gwendolen the question is: Is she marrying Jack or Ernest?

Through their ‘Spread-a-Smile’ project they ensure that not everyone has forgotten them now the news has moved on.

Shire Horse Cart Rides and Display

Expressed in the words of Victor Barry of Treloan Coastal Holidays ‘The Cornish Heavy Horse Society is interested, as a result of our new link with the John Daniels Centre at Penzance (exhibiting), to look into ways of helping disabled organisations. This could assume quite a fair proportion of our future gross effort and could possibly be well assisted by our presence today at the DAD’.

The picture shows our recent involvement with disAbility – taken in front of Penzance town Hall on Se Se’s arrival upon completing 762 miles around the complete SW Coast Footpath. This was to raise funds for the John Daniels Centre new Hydrotherapy pool. Se Se was greeted by 6 Mayors from the various towns she walked through over the two months.
